In 1889, Mattie Piper and her husband bought one-way tickets to Oregon. Within a year, Mattie was back in Kansas, living a life with plenty of hair-raising stories to tell. Join Cheryl Mullenbach, as she introduces Mattie and other brave, daring and gritty women of Kansas.

Learn about a woman who intended to retire in Kansas, but instead became known as the “Wheat Queen.” You’ll find these women, and many others, in the pages of Mullenbach’s books. She’ll feature women from Stagecoach Women: Brave and Daring Women of the Wild West, and Grit, not Glamour: Female Farmers, Ranchers, Ropers and Herders of the American West.

The Smoky Hill Museum is hosting this free presentation, on Thursday, May 2, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Enjoy the presentation in person at the Museum or from the comfort of your own home via Zoom. Register for your Zoom link at www.smokyhillmuseum.org.
