CONCORDIA – In their final home dual of the season and their 2020 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference opener, the No. 25 ranked Cloud County Community College wrestling team would open with two pins and close things out with two open weight forfeits to earn a 30-21 victory over No. 13 ranked Barton Community College inside of Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Wednesday. The win evens Cloud County's all-time record against the Cougars as Barton earned a win in their first match between the squads last year and is now 1-0 in the KJCCC this season."It felt great to get a win tonight and I was happy to see our guys go out and follow the game plan that we discussed in each of their matches" said head coach Cody Cole in a post-dual interview. "We've instilled into our guys that to do whatever they can to help the team and we saw that tonight as even though some of our wrestlers didn't get wins, they made sure not give up bonus points that really made a difference tonight." "Bonus points win duals and our guys definitely did what they had to do to get a win in front of the home crowd tonight."A quick start by the T-Birds would see number nine ranked Blayne Harris earn a fall at 125 pounds in just 1:34 in his first action of the week and would be followed up by a fall in 2:51 by Blake Leiszler at 133 pounds to put CCCC up 12-0. Barton would manage to get on the board with a 7-4 decision at 141 pounds and pick up an extra point with a 14-1 major decision at 149 pounds. In the 157 pound match, the Cougars would earn their long fall of the evening by ending things at the 4:07 mark to take their first dual lead of the night at 13-12 and extend their lead with a 12-0 major decision at 165 pounds. With Cloud County still to earn 12 points due to open weights at 197 pounds and 285 pounds by Barton, the dual would come down to the 174 pound match which would also end up being the match of the evening. With Dante Harper for Cloud County facing off against Jacob Sanchez, Harper would earn a pair of first-period takedowns while allowing an escape to go up 4-1 after three minutes of action. With a sizeable riding time lead, Harper would choose neutral position after Sanchez deferred. The decision would end up working to the advantage of Sanchez as the Barton wrestler would get a takedown to pull within one at 4-3 while cutting down the riding time and then choose neutral to try and take his first lead of the match in the third period. Sanchez would get another takedown in the opening seconds of the third, but see Harper manage to get a reversal that would eventually lead to a fall with just 20 seconds left in the bout as the extra points would flip the dual in favor of the T-Birds for a win. What's next?Cloud County heads west for a pair of Friday matches as the T-Birds will take on Northeastern Junior College and number seven ranked Northwestern Wyoming College in Sterling, Colo.
