Emergency personnel responded to a car fire in the southern part of the county early this morning.

Shortly after midnight, deputies and firefighters from Rural Fire District No. 2 responded to the intersection of South Old 81 and Kansas Highway 4 for the report of a car on fire, Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning. When deputies arrived, they found a 2004 Dodge Intrepid fully engulfed, he said. The driver, James Mauch, 18, of Lindsborg, and his passenger, Nicholas Schreck, 19, of Lindsborg, were out of the car and were not injured, he added.

Hughes said Mauch reported that there was a loud pop and sparks flew from the engine. The car was totaled, Hughes said. Additionally, some grass close to the car was burned, he said.
