Kansas man dead, 3 teens injured in head-on crash, fire

EDITOR'S note: The occupants of the pickup involved in the crash are 18-year-olds, according to the Douglas County Sheriff and not 19 as originally reported.

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Authorities investigating a fatal head-on crash have identified the man who died as Richard Douglas Smith, 48, of Lawrence, according to Douglas County Sheriff Department Spokesperson George Diepenbrock.

Just before 11p.m. Wednesday, a Chevy Malibu driven by Smith was traveling in the 600 Block of East 31 Street, according to the the Douglas County Sheriff's office.

The car crossed the center line and struck a Dodge pickup driven by an 18-year-old man head-on. After impact the pickup caught fire.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.  There were three 18-year-olds in the pickup. An air ambulance transported one to KU Medical Center. EMS transported one to Overland Park Regional Medical Center and one to the hospital in Lawrence.  The sheriff's office reported no additional details.

DOUGLAS COUNTY —A Kansas man died in an accident just before 11p.m. Wednesday in Douglas County.

 A Chevy Malibu driven by a 48-year-old man from Lawrence was traveling in the 600 Block of East 31 Street, according to the the Douglas County Sheriff's office.

The driver of the Chevy was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.  There were three 18-year-olds in the pickup. An air ambulance transported one to KU Medical Center.
