DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 11:30a.m. Saturday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Johnny Wayne Stapleton, 64, Yukon, Oklahoma, was northbound on Kansas 15 at 300th Avenue.&nbsp;

The motorcycle rear-ended a 2012 Chevy Equinox driven b Jennea Linn&nbsp;Remmers, 22, Lost Springs, Kansas, who was beginning to turn eastbound on 300th Avenue.

EMS transported Stapleton to Wesley Medical Center. Remmers was not injured.&nbsp; Stapleton was not wearing a helmet and Remmers was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

A letter to the editor is a written way of talking to a newspaper, magazine, or other regularly printed publication. Letters to the editor are generally found in the first section of the newspaper, or towards the beginning of a magazine, or in the editorial page. They can take a position for or against an issue, or simply inform, or both. They can convince readers by using emotions, or facts, or emotions and facts combined. 

Letters to the editor are usually short and tight, rarely longer than 300 words.

Using a few carefully placed letters, you can generate plenty of community discussion. You can also keep an issue going by preventing it from disappearing from the public eye. You can stimulate the interest of the news media and create more coverage for the matters you're working on. You can also send a "good news" letter to bring recognition to people who deserve it or acknowledge the success of an effort.

The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Cope Notes is a text message-based service that provides individuals with randomly timed messages that contain anything from psychology facts to exercises and journaling prompts. Every subscriber’s text sequence is unique so that no two users ever receive the same message at the same time. 

Each <a href="https://copenotes.com/">Cope Notes</a> text must first undergo a thorough review process by a panel of peer-support advocates and mental health professionals, in order to ensure that the messages will have a positive effect on the subscriber’s health. The ultimate goal of the service is to train the brain to disrupt negative thoughts and promote a more positive pattern of thinking.

"We believe in the importance of mental health. We want to ensure our residents have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and thriving," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "In my own personal experience with Cope Notes, I have found that the right messages seem to come at exactly the right time. It was been an uplifting experience for me, and I am thrilled we get to continue this service to our residents."

In 2022, Saline County initially offered the service for free to 300 residents. Because of the overwhelming response and in an effort to provide the service to more Saline County residents, the program is being offered at a 50 percent discount, according to information from the county.

Saline County continues to offer Cope Notes at 50-percent discount

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

Precipitation reporting organization seeks local, area volunteers

What’s worse than a bogus charity? A bogus charity with a dishonest fundraiser. The FTC has sued and stopped dishonest charity fundraisers that&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2020/09/spot-and-stop-dishonest-charity-fundraisers">called people</a>&nbsp;to get them to donate to fake charities. Some prey on your kindness and desire to help people impacted by weather emergencies or a disaster. But when you get a call from a charity fundraiser, how do you know the caller is telling you the truth?

Ask the caller specific questions.

What is the charity’s name, phone number, or address? Write these down so you can confirm them later. Keep in mind that many charity names sound alike, and that sham charities often use names that are sound and look like names of legitimate charities.

How much of your donation will go directly to the programs you want to support?

Will your donation be tax-deductible? Not every call seeking a donation is from a charity. Some calls might be from Political Action Committees or other groups where donations are not deductible. See more questions to ask here.

Resist the pressure to donate on the spot.

After you’ve listened to the caller, hang up the phone and think about what they said. Then, go online and do your own research:

Search for the organization’s name and phone number, plus the word “scam” or “complaint.” What you find might help you decide if you want to make that donation.

Look up the organization’s name and address. Does it show up? If it doesn’t, that could be a sign the caller was lying to you.

FTC: How to spot and stop dishonest charity fundraisers

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The start of a new school year is an expensive time for families. If you are struggling to pay for phone and internet services, there are programs to help you stay connected.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pensions &amp; Survivors Pension Benefit •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Programs (income based) •&nbsp; Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone who qualifies for Lifeline is automatically eligible to participate in Affordable Connectivity Plan. Others may still qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

• Are approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including the&nbsp;USDA Community Eligibility Provision.&nbsp; • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.&nbsp; • Meet the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.&nbsp;

Due to higher income maximums, Affordable Connectivity Plan  also has the potential to help families that may not qualify for other types of assistance. The maximum income for a family of four to qualify for the&nbsp; program is&nbsp;$60,000 per year compared to $40,500 for Lifeline. Both Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Plan offer additional discounts for subscribers living on tribal lands.

Plans available to help Kansans unable to pay for phone, internet services stay connected

Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas will mark the 8-year anniversary of its Salina Thrift Store with a community celebration on Monday, June 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will take place in the store’s parking lot at 1500 S. 9th Street and will include free hot dogs, cookies, and water. Shoppers who make an $8 purchase will also receive a complimentary Catholic Charities Thrift Store tote bag.&nbsp;Food, drinks, and totes are available while supplies last.

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 7

Kansas Department of Transportation Release&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) plans to begin work to repair multiple bridges on I-135 in Saline and McPherson county on Monday, June 9.

This will be a three-phase project consisting of patching and bridge approach repair, beginning in Saline County and working south to work in McPherson County. During phase one, bridges between exit 95 (I-70) and exit 92 (Crawford St.) will be repaired. During phase two, bridges between exit 92 (Crawford St.) and 72 (Smoky Valley Rd.) will be repaired. During phase three, bridges between exit 72 (Smoky Valley Rd.) and 60 (U.S. 56) will be repaired.

During construction, I-135 traffic will be reduced to one lane at the location of construction.

Barkley Construction LLC is the prime contractor of the $4.4 million project. Work is scheduled to be complete in October 2026 with a winter shutdown period from late November to mid-March 2026.

Saturday Morning Show preview for June 7th

Salina Police arrested the male suspect who caused another fire at First Bank Kansas, after starting one a day prior to his arrest.

According to the Salina Police Department on Thursday, June 5th at around 11:00 pm, a witness of Salina was driving past First Bank Kansas on 1333 W. Crawford <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/200e2b1a-5999-4f0a-bb99-2841ab59e914">where the crime initially took place&nbsp;on June, 4th</a>. The individual noticed the side of the bank was on fire and drove closer to where the fire was taking place.&nbsp;Furthermore, the individual noticed an SUV leaving area.

Police state that the witness stopped the fire by stomping out a piece of plywood, which was set by the suspect to start the fire. Officers then received report and during the investigation, bank employees had given a name of a possible suspect who was reportedly angry with the bank.

Officers then arrived to the suspect's house on 1600 W. Republic Ave. and located the SUV that matched the description of the witness report. Officers discovered the suspect was in the home as well and arrested 43-year old, Mathew Phouthavong.

Phouthavong was booked into the Saline County Jail on 2 counts of Arson.

UPDATED: Salina Police arrested the male suspect who caused a fire at First Bank Kansas

A man was arrested after sexually assaulting a child at a Salina home and police are currently investigating further.

According to the Salina Police Department on Tuesday, June 3rd at around 1:30 pm, officers received a call from Salina Regional Health Center regarding a child who was sexually assaulted.

When police arrived to the hospital, an investigation was conducted. Officers determined earlier that morning, 31-year old Christopher Terry had inappropriately touched the child that was under the age of 10-years old at a residence in east central Salina. A family member of the child had found out about the incident when it occurred.&nbsp;

Officers then arrived to the home where the crime happened and arrested Terry without incident. He was booked into the Saline County Jail for 3 counts of Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child.

Salina man accused of sexually assaulting a child, investigation currently ongoing

A Salina man was sent to the hospital after rolling over three times in his vehicle.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday, June 5th at 2:47 pm,&nbsp; a 65-year old man by the name of Johnny Schneider, was traveling southbound on the 4200 block of Burma Rd. in a 2012 Honda Civic. 

Schneider made an exit on Burma and suddenly lose control of his vehicle, causing him to enter into a ditch. The vehicle then rolled over three times before coming to rest on its tires.

Saline County authorities responded to the scene and Schneider was properly restrained.

He was then transported to Salina Regional Health Center by EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

There were no reports of alcohol being a factor.

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 6

DICKINSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Thursday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Jeep Gladiator driven by Robin Faye Hardman, 62, Bogue, and a 2011 Hyundai Sonata driven by Ernesto&nbsp;Saenz Flores, 19, Wichita, were southbound on U.S. 56 at 300 Avenue. The Hyundai struck the Jeep that had pulled into the turning lane and attempted to make a U-turn to go northbound.

EMS transported Flores to Salina Regional Health Center. Hardman and a passenger in the Jeep were not injured.&nbsp; All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kan.man hospitalized in Salina after crash during u-turn

CHICAGO (AP) — Tim Elko hit a two-run homer, Adrian Houser pitched six strong innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Saturday.

Chase Meidroth also went deep for the White Sox, who have won three straight for the second time this season.

Houser (2-1) gave up a run and six hits while striking out six and walking one. It was the 32-year-old right-hander's fourth quality start since signing with the White Sox on May 20.

Cam Booser and Steven Wilson each gave up a hit in a scoreless inning, and Dan Altavilla got the last three outs for his second career save — first since 2020 while pitching for Seattle.

Michael Wacha (3-5) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Royals first baseman Vinny Pasquantino had was 3 for 3, including his 10th homer in the second inning for a 1-0 lead.

Elko's homer in the bottom of the second gave the White Sox a 2-1 lead. Meidroth pushed the advantage to two runs with his shot in the third, and Edgar Quero capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

With runners on the corners and two outs in the eighth, Wilson struck out veteran catcher Salvador Pérez swinging to end the inning. Pérez struck out four times in four at-bats.

Other than Pasquantino, the rest of the Royals' lineup went 5 for 30 with nine strikeouts.

⚾ Elko hits 2-run HR as White Sox beat the Royals 

CHICAGO (AP) — Luis Robert Jr. drove in three runs in his return to the lineup, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2 on Friday night.

Mike Tauchman homered to help the last-place White Sox to their third win in four games. Davis Martin struck out seven while pitching six innings of two-run ball.

White Sox catcher&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/white-sox-teel-5483da186d1af7e30bbcf366df4c3609">Kyle Teel</a>, one of baseball's top prospects, went 1 for 2 with two walks and scored a run in his major league debut.

Robert hit a tiebreaking two-run single in Chicago's five-run eighth inning. He also had a run-scoring single in the second.

It was Robert's first game since Monday. The slumping slugger has been working on some adjustments at the plate, and he got an extra day after he was struck on his head by a ball in the batting cage.

The White Sox beat the Royals for the second time in the last 20 matchups.

Maikel Garcia and Vinnie Pasquantino hit back-to-back homers for Kansas City with two out in the third inning. It was the seventh of the season for Garcia, and No. 9 for Pasquantino.

Tauchman tied it at 2 when he connected against Seth Lugo in the fifth.

The White Sox loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, and Robert drove in pinch-runner Michael A. Taylor and Austin Slater with a bloop single to right against Jonathan Bowlan (1-1).

Teel scored on Taylor Clarke’s wild pitch, and errors on third baseman Garcia and Clarke brought home two more runs.

Jordan Leasure (1-4) pitched an inning for the win.

Royals rookie Jac Caglianone went 0 for 4. He is 1 for 17 in his first four games.

Leasure walked Jonathan India and Bobby Witt Jr. singled as Kansas City put the first two on in the eighth. Teel pounced on a bunt by Garcia and got the first out at third. Witt took third on a fielder’s choice before Salvador Perez fouled out, ending the inning.

The Royals swept a four-game home series with the White Sox from May 5-8 and outscored them 19-4. Chicago leads the all-time series 440-434.

Royals right-hander Michael Wacha (3-4, 2.88 ERA) starts Saturday against White Sox right-hander Adrian Houser (1-1, 1.47 ERA).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;The Kansas City Chiefs, in partnership with Nike, will be hosting eight high school football teams for an “11-On” competition at Paragon Star (<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/search/1401+NW+River+Road?entry=gmail&amp;source=g" target="_blank">1401 NW River Road</a>) in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, on Monday, June 9.

The “11-On" initiative is a unique, half-day, team experience that supports scholastic high school football team competition. It focuses on building character and life skills along with team foundations throughout the exciting, fast-paced, competitive event.

(June 5, 2025)—Aaron Sabato became the new Wichita Wind Surge franchise home run leader and recorded five RBIs in a 10-8 slugfest victory for Wichita over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Arvest Ballpark. Seven of the 10 runs for the Wind Surge came in over the last three innings on eight total hits.&nbsp;

Sabato connected on a double off the wall in left center to score Kala’i Rosario for the game’s first run in the top of the first. Carter Jensen hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in the bottom of the first, and Rudy Martin ran in to score from second base to tie the game.&nbsp;

Sabato crushed a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, over the Wind Surge bullpen in left field to give Wichita a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth. The long ball puts him as the new Wind Surge all-time home run hitter in franchise history.
