Two occupants of an SUV were fortunate to escape serious injury late Saturday morning when a train hit the vehicle in west-central Saline County.
Shortly before noon Saturday, emergency responders were called to an accident near the intersection of Old Highway 40 and Link Road, a couple of miles west of Bavaria.
According to Saline County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Scott Anderson, a south-bound tractor-trailer rig and the north-bound silver SUV were stopped at the tracks for an east-bound train that was approaching. Anderson said front end of the SUV was near the tracks and when the train got to the intersection with Link Road, it hit the SUV and spun it into the railroad crossing sign for north-bound traffic.
An adult female, Jessica Liphart, 35, of Salina, and a small child who Anderson estimated was two to three years old were in the vehicle. The woman was taken by ambulance to Salina Regional Health Center. Anderson said he did not believe her injuries were life threatening. the child was not injured, he said.
The tractor-trailer rig was not damaged and its driver was not hurt, Anderson said.
The train was finally able to stop shortly before it got to Bavaria.
