Dale Cole has been volunteering at the Smoky Hill River Festival for over 40 years. His friend Harold Cooley got him started in 1976 and Dale has been working the gates at the festival ever since.
Nancy Scanlan started volunteering two years after Dale started and then recruited her daughter Amy Scanlan-Cole to get involved with the their committee. They are mainly responsible for finding people to volunteer for working the gates. They are in constant motion going around all three days to check on and make sure their people are in place and that have the supplies the need. Dale said,”most of the people on our team have volunteered probably for 10-15 years.”
All three say that it is like family. They enjoy seeing people, they love the festival, and it is just so much fun to help.
Romeyn Lauber has been volunteering at the River Festival for 20 years in the children’s art area known as Artyopolis. She said that her mother instilled the value of volunteering in her.
Lauber really enjoys watching the kids and seeing them be creative. She said,”you get more out of it then you put into it, because seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and the pride on the parents’ faces when they make their little works of art gives you a good feeling about it, it’s great.”
