Southeast of Saline squares off with Beloit at 3:00 this afternoon in Lyons with a trip to the regional baseball final on the line. In a matchup that is known as the“Trojan war,” these two rivals will square off will against Marion or Hillsboro later tonight.
For the Trojans of Southeast, this is familiar territory, as they look to avenge a loss to Beloit from last year that eliminated them from this very stage of the playoffs. As they have for the last three seasons, these two teams split the regular season series. This year, Southeast took the first game 2-0 before suffering a 10-1 rout in the second meeting.
This SES team looks different from last season’s squad, boasting an impressive 16-5 record and an NCAA league title. A wave of Freshman talent has revitalized the program, with the addition of players like Jaxson Gebhardt who is hitting .420 on the season, and Bryant Banks, who’s 0.89 ERA has led the Southeast to 3 victories this season.
Beloit remains a formidable foe with many of their key players returning from the elimination game against SES just a year ago. Neither team has advanced to the state tournament in any of the last five seasons despite the great success from both programs in that span. Both semi-final games are scheduled for a 3:00 first pitch. The regional championship is scheduled to begin at 5pm following the semis.
