Kansas City, MO – Jeff Jernigan died in his own style and time, peacefully and elegantly at the Kansas City Hospice House on January 8. He was 66. Jeff is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Cheryl; three brothers, Doug and wife Soni of Canada; Tom and wife Diane of Council Grove, KS; Randy and wife Linda of Durango, CO; and an abundant tribe of loving nieces, nephews, as well as grand nieces and nephews. His devoted parents Derald and Mary Ellen, and adorable younger sister Heidi preceded him in death.
Jeff was born and grew up in Council Grove, KS. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1973 with a degree in political science. Cheryl and he lived in Topeka for 13 years where he began his career in banking. In 1986, they relocated to Kansas City where he nurtured his career as a banking executive and community leader. His most cherished work and accomplishments were in championing women in business.
Throughout his life, Jeff enjoyed being involved in non-profit and community organizations…often in leadership roles. The current ones include KU Cancer Center, Turning Point, Girl Scouts, Epic, Research College of Nursing, Research Medical Center, and Rotary. His loves (besides family and friends) through the years were golf, long distance bicycle rides, even longer Harley rides, music (he was an amazing drummer and singer), mentoring start-ups through Growth Mentoring Services, and serving as a resource for newly diagnosed cancer patients.
His Celebrations of Life are scheduled for Saturday, January 13 at 10 AM at the Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, MO; and 3:30 PM at the Council Grove/Dunlap United Methodist Church, Council Grove, KS. Receptions will follow both.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to KU Endowment to support metastatic cancer research at the University of Kansas Cancer Center, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Mail Stop 3012, Kansas City, KS 66160. Of course you are welcome to make a contribution to a charity of your choice.
