On Tuesday, September 20th, at 6:30 p.m. community members are invited to celebrate the completion of Schilling’s 2014 Bond work. Schilling Elementary School’s completion will be commemorated with a ribbon cutting, tours, dedication plaque and art unveiling.
The evening offers everyone an opportunity to see Schilling’s improvements as well as the new art elements made possible under the advisement of Salina Arts and Humanities.
Schilling’s new artwork features two murals – one designed for viewing and the other for interaction. Local artist Connie Burket worked with 5th graders to design a 4-panel installation titled Windows on the World We Wish for You. The panels, made up of cut-paper collages, mimic the bright yellow framing around windows and doors in the main entrance to the school. The panels depict the students’ vision of a world in which people succeed together every day and reference the school motto, “Together We Succeed.” The second installation features a magnetic surface with design challenges that allows students to manipulate 1,113 hand-cut geometric shapes. It is designed to build spatial perception, reasoning and imaginative problem-solving.
The brief, plaque dedication ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. with tours following. At 7:15 p.m. parents of kindergarten students are invited to a special activity time in the kindergarten classrooms. Everyone is welcome and the event is free.
