Vicki, since retiring, has devoted countless hours at the Salina Animal Shelter. She volunteers every day. Some of the things she manages is the website, this is where she does write-ups on the animals that are up for adoption. she is also involved in testing the animals. Testing is where they make sure the animal is sociable and will be ready for adoption. “We go in and socialize the animals, we sit with them and work with them.” Testing is done for Rescue Wagon, this is where the animals will be taken to other places that have room and hopefully they will get adopted.
Vicki said they are not seeing a decrease in strays but have seen a decrease in euthanizing due to volunteers helping animals become adopted and programs like Rescue Wagon.
Vicki also donates time every week at the Salina Regional Health Center as a helper in the hospital. She is an escort at the lobby, she wheels people to registration, rooms or surgery. She said that she even runs flowers to rooms or helps deliver paper work that is needed around the hospital.
It was a real pleasure getting the chance to sit down and talk with Vicki, she definitely exemplifies what it means to be a Hero of the Week. From the Salina Post and BANK VI, thank you for all you do Vicki!
