SHAWNEE COUNTY —The deadly storm on Tuesday in northeast Kansas forced legislators working during the final day of their veto session at the State Capitol to shelter in place as the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings.

The storm  ripped through the city of Westmoreland 60 miles northwest of Topeka. One person died, three were injured and homes and outbuildings were destroyed, according to Pottawatomie County officials.

The temporary delay due to the weather forced legislators to work into the early hours of Wednesday where they passed another tax reduction plan before they adjourned.
